The Daily Tar Heel
October 10, 2003

The lab concluded with a visit to The Daily Tar Heel, UNC's student-run newspaper and the paper of record for Orange County. DTH Editor Elyse Ashburn showed the class the insides of the paper's entire newsroom all while explaining the DTH's rich history and tradition of closely covering UNC.

Unlike the Gazette or the Chapel Hill News, Ashburn explained how the Daily Tar Heel has a student focus. But the publication also includes coverage of staff and faculty issues as well as town/gown relations, making it a mix of the lab's first two publications and a fitting end to the class' trip.

Through flipping through the paper's archives, including a framed version of its first edition over a hundred years ago, students got a grasp at the wealth of news generated over the years by UNC, and the kind of interest, debate and scrutiny that news has stirred in the greater University community.

DTH Editor Elyse Ashburn gives the class a tour of the DTH newsroom, seen here from its "backshop" production room.

Lab members search through the paper's extensive archived volumes, the official papers of record for Orange County.
