Knight Commission: Sports and Higher Education
William Friday and Douglas Dibbert, Oct. 27, 2003

Two of the original members of the prestigious Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics spoke to the class of their ongoing work to review and reform the growing commercial landscape of college athletics. Dibbert detailed the Commission's reports, first issued in 1991, that recommended to college presidents an increased focus on the academic and fiscal integrity of college athletic programs. While about half of the Commission's original recommendations have been adopted, Friday highlighted the Commission's finding that cases of academic fraud continue to persist on many college campuses. With the value of a University degree at stake, the two commission members outlined numerous suggestions for making the nature of college athletics consistent with the mission of higher education.
