The Engaged Institution
With Dr. Lynn Blanchard, Director of the Carolina Center for Public Service

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was founded as “the University of the people,” and as such has a strong culture and tradition of service. Like most American public universities, UNC-Chapel Hill has a tri-partite mission of teaching, research, and service. How service is conceptualized and operationalized differs considerably, but over the last decade there has been growing use of the term “engagement” when referring to ways universities work in partnership with local, regional, or international entities to address community issues. During this section of AMST 94 students will learn about various methods and trends that help define an engaged university and explore how universities can better address the mission of service.
