The Town/Gown Relationship
October 3, 2003, by Ben Adams

First there was the University. Then there was the town. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, founded in 1793, and the town of Chapel Hill, incorporated in 1819 have always shared a close, dynamic relationship. When one hears the name Chapel Hill, it could refer to both the university and the town, and in many ways they are practically one and the same. The two entities share the fire department and many other services. Students are considered residents of Chapel Hill and often live within the community. The University and town don't always share the same interests, however, which has become quite apparent with the University's recent plans to expand. On this lab, we visited Town Hall, the Fire Department and spoke with a police officer about the relationship between the two Chapel Hills, the University and town.

Carolina Blue Fire Trucks are just one example of how closely the University and Town are intertwined.
