About the Course Goals of the course: The course prepares students to read and understand the earliest literary language of the Slavs -- Old Church Slavic (OCS). We will study the sound system of OCS, the paradigms of the nouns and verbs, and read exciting excerpts from the OCS manuscripts. This course should benefit those interested in the study of Indo-European, since OCS is always cited in comparisons with other Indo-European languages, and reveals many of the features attributed to the postulated earliest language of the Slavs. The course will also be a significant help to those students involved in the study of Russian, since the Russian language has taken a great number of elements from OCS. Course Materials: (1) Copies of Horace Lunt's Old Church Slavic Grammar are available for purchase at the Slavic Department office (425 Dey Hall). (2) Later on copies of texts and glossary will also be made available through the Department office. Course Requirements: Weekly Assignments: OCS translations, which we will go over in class. One midterm examination A 2-part final examination consisting of a take home exam and a short indo-class examination.
