No matter what some of you may
think.......CHEERLEADING IS A SPORT!!!!
Cheerleading is one of the most unique sports because
of its demand of being skilled in dance, gymnastics, fitness and acrobatics.
Cheering
is also an an art that represents the most positive aspects of the preceding
components. However, it was not always
as complex as it is today. Thomas Pebbler and six other MEN.....yes
MEN...... were the first cheerleaders. At a Princeton game in the
early 1800’s these men decided to put themselves in charge of leading cheers.
The first organized cheerleading group followed in the 1890’s and women
became active in the 1920’s.
The goal of cheerleading is to “effectively lead a crowd
in support of athletic teams and to generate spirit and pride within a
school or community.” Now, more than ever, cheerleaders are serious
about this goal along with others, which includes winning national competitions.
These competitions take place for all ages, and they are AMAZING.
One of the most important and fun parts of cheerleading
is a great way to learn about physics. STUNTS!!! Stunts involve
one to four persons holding or throwing people into the air. They
require force and tension, along with a mastery of defeating gravity.
Look ahead to see what’s in store for cheerleading and physics.
Although there are many other aspects
of cheering, that this page will not go into, like leadership, sportsmanship
and teamwork---the single purpose of this site is to prove that once and
for all, that cheerleading is a very intense and difficult and it encompasses
the elements of gymnastics, dance, fitness and yes.....PHYSICS.... into
one discipline that is not only a sport within itself, but serves other
sports in a way that no other art (form of communication) can.
