During a period of over 300 years Black Americans endured hardships
such as slavery, Jim Crows laws, and segregation. These, along
with other contributing factors, are the foundations for the reasons
behind why some African-Americans are in strong support of reparations
from the United States Government.
Reparation is the term used to describe an act of making amends
or giving satisfaction for a wrong or injustice. Under this definition,
Black Americans are confident that the United States Government
is far overdue in correcting a historical wrong. Often referred
to as the "Black Holocaust", thousands of Africans were
displaced from their native land and brought to America. In America,
those Africans were forced into a system of free indentured servitude.
Thousands of Africans lived and died in slavery building and establishing
this country without ever receiving any sort of payment or compensation.
After slavery, racist legislation prevented blacks from finding
ways to advance themselves in society.
Through my research I hope to learn exactly how much Black Americans
are demanding from the United States Government. I am also curious
to learn the opposing side of the argument. I will be interested
in discovering why some Americans do not believe that African-Americans
deserve of any form of compensation for their labor.
My web page is intended for a broad continuum of groups and individuals.
Hopefully, my web page can serve as a medium for individuals on
opposing sides of the argument to understand the sentiments and
concerns of the other. This page is also for the younger generation.
Hopefully it can help those who may not have a strong identification
with the issue gain insight into its historical significance.
