Provided the patient does not have a
life threatening traumatic injury, the needs of burn patients
are typically best met in a Burn Center. The two burn
centers in North Carolina either are presently (North Carolina
Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals) verified by the ABA or
intend to be verified (Wake Forest University Baptist Medical
Center) in the coming weeks. Furthermore, both of these
burn centers are co-located with Level I Trauma Centers as
designated both by the American College of Surgeons and the NC
Office of EMS. No other burn center in any state
contiguous to North Carolina has a burn center that complies
with the Verification Standards. Furthermore, not all of
these non-verified burn centers are co-located with Level I
Trauma Centers.
As a reminder, based on the
quality of care, convenience and accessibility to the family for
immediate, rehabilitation and follow up care, and to minimize
the impact of interstate insurance/Medicaid issues, all patients
injured in North Carolina should be referred to one of the two
North Carolina Burn Centers prior to consulting services based
outside of the state of North Carolina.
