Faro Punta Torrecilla, Dominican Republic

This is a photo of the lighthouse at Punta Torrecilla, just east of the entrance to the harbor of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The lighthouse is 125 feet tall and clearly built of concrete. The photo was taken by the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Gentian on a port visit to Santo Domingo. The Gentian is a former offshore buoy tender. According to former coast guardsman Bob Nogueira (writing in 2001), she was "recommissioned on May 27,1999, as Coast Guard Cutter Gentian WIX 290, Caribbean Support Tender. She now works out of Miami with multi-mission responsibility including training, logistical support and maintenance for a number of nations in the Caribbean. She spends an average of 185 days away from Miami visiting about 22 countries training foreign crew members. She is now 59 years old and appears to be still going strong." (Built in 1942, the Gentian was finally decommissioned on June 23, 2006.)
