Professional
- Currently I am an Assistant Professor in the Department
of Anesthesiology, University of North Carolina School
of Medicine.
- I'm not looking to get hired, but just in case you've got the
perfect job
(nice people, fun cases, short day, no call, plenty of vacation time,
good salary/benefits, nice house/property): here's my resume.
- Anesthesia Jeopardy - I
set up
some
web page templates after a couple of our residents attempted to do a
Jeopardy-type
game for one of our morning conferences. They used a pretty low-tech
method
that didn't work all that well .... I used the template myself for one
of my lectures. Feel free to download the template and enter your own
data. But if you use it for anesthesia, please send me a copy!
- My (old) Anesthesia
Education Web
Site
- I became addicted to the Palm several years ago (1999?). I eventually
set up a web site for anyone interested in learning anesthesiology
(mostly,
for our residents). The site was very simple and readable even
on tiny screens. It has now moved to the UNC anesthesia
department server, and is database driven: pda.aims.unc.edu.

Games
- RPLOPS: a
scoring system for games with variable numbers of players and lengths
of play, based on rank.
- Good game companies. Too many games to list them all, so just a
few highlights (complete owned list, with ratings here).
- WotC:
Magic: the Gathering (my
way out-of-date Magic page), Filthy Rich, Guillotine, Twitch,
RoboRally
- Rio Grande Games:
El Grande, Tikal, Power Grid
- Mayfair Games:
Settlers
of
Catan, Cities and Knights of Catan, Iron Dragon
- Cheapass Games: Give
Me
the
Brain, Lord of the Fries
- Uberplay:
Wildlife, New England, Oasis, High Society
- Computer: Civilization II, Diablo 2

Television
- SciFi
- Star Trek: pretty much all the variants to some degree
- Babylon 5:
a great
epic, but really horrible
movies.
- Farscape: series is over, thanks to the morons at SciFi?! Well,
morons
somewhere, anyway!
- Comedies
- Everybody Loves Raymond
- King of Queens
- Drama
- 24: what a
great
show, although I think season 1 was probably the best!

PDAs
- History
- Started out with a Newton 110. Still have it (like new - email
me if
you
want to buy it)! It was pretty cool, but way to bulky to be useful.
Will
have to eBay it some day.
- Got a Palm IIIx next. SO much nicer - small, fast. Not as cool,
though,
but still very very useful
- 12/99: Moved on to a Palm Vx - needed something even smaller
that I
could
carry easily. Use it (in its leather carry case) as my wallet for a few
years, I think. The digitizer broke about 1.5 years in; exchanged (Best
Buy warranty ... yeah!) for another one. Digitizer failed again, and
changed
to ... (not an indictment of Palms - I'd dropped this thing so many
times
I can't believe it lasted as long as it did!)
- 12/02: Just had to have the Tungsten|T! Wouldn't you know it
... 4
months
later and they come out with the |C, with 64Mb memory! I want it!
- 7/03: I've been having problems (again!) with the digitizer on
my T|T
...
I have to reset it almost daily! I've put up with it for over a month
so
far, but it's getting pretty annoying! Will have to go in and replace
or
upgrade soon (got the Best Buy extended warranty).
- 12/03 (I think): digitizer problem just too annoying ...
upgraded to a Tungsten|T3. That is a _great_ device. I just wish it had
wireless networking built in!
- Here's a link to a bunch
of
other
stuff I've found useful to have on my Palm. It includes a lot of work
stuff,
but most things are generally applicable.

HanDbase Applets I've Written
HanDbase is a great
relational database
program. I have written a few applets, which are available on their
website:
- Princes
of Florence Aid - helps you play the Princes of Florence
Game
- Magic:
the Gathering Compendium - a HUGE
database that does everything from keeping track of your inventory to
calculating deck statistics (mana etc).
Better to do most initial work on the desktop, and use the Palm (after
trimming
the inventory table down to what you have or want) for looking up
things,
making a few changes. Until Palms get a lot faster, don't change views
or filters too much ... you'll wait a long time! A lot of work ...
paypal me if you want the full version.
- Life
or Something Like It
- started out with the myLife applet by Brian H Maskell. But that was
way
too much info, and a bit hard to use. This is a much modified,
customized
version. I'm big into gaming, so there's a place to inventory games,
and also to record game scores (for games of up to 6 people).
- Case
Log - for tracking patients, procedures, resident evaluations etc.
Nice 'cause it is completely open; can customize as you need.
