Princes of Florence
Back to Game Rules Index
Setup
- Each player takes a game board, figure and round marker, all the
same color.
- Shuffle the Profession cards and deal 4 to each player. From
these,
each player chooses 3 and returns the 4th.
- Each player gets 3500 Florin (2 x 1000, 2 x 500, 5 x 100). Money
supply may be kept private.
- Place the black Round marker on Round 1. Place the black figure
in
front of the starting player (random).
- Remove enough of each Freedom so that there is 1 less than the
number of players. (2 each for 3 players, etc.)
- Place the score track in the middle of everyone and arrange the
rest of the pieces as follows:
- Left of score track: Forests, Lakes, Parks, Jesters,
Builders, Prestige cards and Recruiting cards (all face-up)
- Right of score track: Buildings (sorted by large,
medium, small), Freedoms, Profession cards (reshuffled) and Bonus cards
(both face-down).
Turn Sequence
Auction Phase
- Starting player bids 200 Florin for any one object type on the
left
side of the scoring track. If he does not (e.g. lack of funds) he may
not bid on any object this turn and will not receive any object from
this phase.
- Going clockwise, each player may increase the bid by 100 Florin
(and
only 100 Florin) or pass. Once a player passes, he may not bid on that
object again.
- When all players have passed but one, the winning player pays the
bid to the bank, takes one of the object won (see Objects) and places
his round marker on top of that object stack.
- Repeat as above, leaving out players who have won an auction
this round or who can’t bid. If the starting player has won an auction,
the next player to his left who hasn’t starts the bidding at 200 Florin.
- Auctions continue until each player has either won or passed.
Note:
the last player to acquire an object simply chooses one and pays the
Bank 200 Florin. At the end of the auction, every player will have
purchased one item or passed on the opportunity entirely.
Action Phase
- Clockwise from the starting player, each person may
perform 2 actions
in any order
- “x” is the number of times an
action may be performed in a turn (i.e.,
once only or not)
- Complete a Work (2x) - Play a Profession card from hand and
calculate Work Value (WV). (see Actions)
- Build a Building (2x) - pay Bank required amount (0, 300 or 700
depending on Builders) and place building in Principality according to
placement rules. Score 3 PP.
- Take a Profession Card (1x) - Pay 300 to the Bank and choose
one
of
the top 5 cards. Place the other 4 facedown in any order at the bottom
of the Profession stack.
- Introduce a Freedom (1x) - Pay 300 to Bank and place Freedom in
Principality.
- Acquire a Bonus card (2x) - Pay 300 to Bank and choose one of
the
top 5 cards. Place the other 4 facedown in any order at the bottom of
the Bonus stack.
Cleanup/Scoring
- The player with the highest WV of works completed during the
round
scores 3 PP. Players remove their markers from the scoring track.
- The starting figure is passed left to the next player.
- Move the black Round marker ahead 1 to the next Round number. The
game ends after the 7th round is completed. Any players with Prestige
cards now score those points if they fulfilled the requirements of the
card(s). The player with the most PP is the winner. If players are
tied, the one with the most money wins the tie.
Clarifications
- A player may move backwards on the scoring track to get 100
Florin per
point given up.
- PP may be bought with money only when a Work is completed, and
only
with money earned for that work.
- A Recruiting card always counts as a Profession card for WV,
Prestige
cards, Bonus cards, etc.
- WV is never scored as PP. 3 PP is scored for having the highest
WV in a
round
