Division of Sciatic
N in Popliteal Fossa: Anatomical Implications for Popliteal Nerve Blockade
Vloka et al. Anesth Analg 2001; 92:215-7
Reviewed by: R. Prasad, MD
Summary:
-
Dissected lower extremeties of 15 cadavers (28 legs; 2 unusable).
-
Measured point of SN split (into Tibial N, Common Peroneal N) above popliteal
crease.
-
Distance HIGHLY variable; 60.5 +/- 27 mm, with range from 0-115 mm.
-
Only 2 legs had SN division > 100mm above crease
Recommendations:
-
For single-injection technique of popliteal nerve block, insert needle
100mm above popliteal crease
-
Findings less important for double-injection technique, where look for
TN and CPN stimulation individually.
