No solids after midnight the night before operation.

Clear liquids (apple juice/black coffee/tea/water) OK up to 2 hrs. before
check-in time.

Do not take DM pills on the morning of surgery.

Do not take insulin on the morning of operation. Give insulin when patient
arrives to hospital.

Uses Insulin, Check-in Time At or After 10am
Either:
-
Follow instruction from your doctor who normally treats your diabetes
- OR -
-
No solids after midnight the night before operation. Clear liquids OK up
to 2 hrs before check-in time.

Drink 6 oz of clear apple juice before 8:30 a.m. the morning of your operation

After taking apple juice, take insulin as follows:
-
Add the usual doses of Regular and NPH/Lente together, then divide by two.

Take this amount (half usual total dose) on the morning of surgery as NPH
or Lente.
DO NOT TAKE REGULAR OR 70/30 INSULIN ON THE DAY OF SURGERY
DO NOT TAKE INSULIN UNTIL HAVE TAKEN 6 OZ OF APPLE JUICE
