The Daily Tar Heel columns

March 21, 2001: "NBA Doesn't Hold More for Forte"

"It's like the final minute of a really big game, Joe, and the ball's in your hands. All season during these situations, anyone with a thumbnail of basketball knowledge knew you'd fire away. So perhaps Heels fans won't be too surprised to hear that you've allegedly decided to turn pro, as reported Monday by sportstalk.com. Hardly anyone expects you to pass up the biggest shot of your life.

"Call me naive, but I think you will, for now. There's no doubt you could go, but there's a question whether you should.

"Just say it ain't so, Joe. The money's tempting, sure, but it'll be there later. Why not remain in Chapel Hill for another year?"

March 14, 2001: "Dreaming's Easy From the Front Row"

"The horn might as well have been an alarm clock -- anticipated and undeniable, an earsplitting shrill blaring much sooner than it should have. There were 19 minutes, five seconds remaining in the first half of "Senior Day" when head coach Matt Doherty substituted for Jim Everett, who was making his first start on a varsity basketball team, high school or collegiate.

"Everett filed to his customary seat at the end of the UNC bench, his 15 minutes of fame having lasted exactly 55 seconds."

January 24, 2001: "'King' of Golf Disappoints USGA"

"Palmer should ask to carry a shovel in his golf bag as his 15th club, he's dug himself that big a hole. No one made Palmer take a stance on PGA Tour v. Martin. No one made him support the illegal driver. And no one -- not even King Arnie -- can spin doctor out of this bunker.

"Palmer, 71, now considers a good day whenever he musters together a round in which he shoots near his age. Meanwhile, worldwide legions of Arnie's Army cringe each day their seemingly fearless leader continues to shoot his legacy in the foot.

"Makes you wonder if Palmer wishes he could save face and rake over his mistakes.

"But should we be fooled to think the King would take a mulligan?"

January 17, 2001: "Game Sadly Ends with Violence"

"Participating in athletics, especially in high school, is an amazing opportunity for kids to learn how to work hard and to play hard.

"Student athletes, kept busy by classes and practices and games and pep rallies and wearing letter jackets as they walk down the hallways while underclassmen nervously whisper by the lockers, learn about discipline and teamwork. To stay eligible, athletes have to keep up their grades, which keeps them out of trouble.

"So it's beyond me why someone must bring trouble in the form of a hand-held to a packed high school gym on a Friday night."

Carolina Blue articles

April 3, 2001: "No Signs of Rust on Rust Adams"

"Russ Adams loves playing in baseball games. More so, though, he loves ending them. Thrice this year he has strolled to the plate with bat and ballgame resting in his hands and delivered each time, knocking home the winning run while knocking out the opponent. He's got better timing than a Swiss watch."

February 16, 2001: "Heels Sweep Opening Weekend"

"Feb. 11 was a near-perfect day at Boshamer Stadium for Tar Heel baseball fans. With warm weather in the air and a hot-hitting team in the dugout, the Heels brought their best punch and quickly knocked out the Dukes, 23-9, thanks to a nine-run second-inning outburst and three-run homers by Adam Greenberg, Sean Farrell and Chris Maples.

"I would never have expected (a big win), but I think it's probably one of the best things that could happen," Fox said, adding that the margin of victory allows his team "take a deep breath" before plunging forward.

"Although grateful to win big, Fox actually had hoped for a different type of game. "I'd rather have a game where we got behind and caught up, got behind and caught up, got behind and caught up," he said. "Then I could tell a little bit more about us.""

January 30, 2001: "Young Guns Arm Carolina's Pitching Staff"

"After churning out at least a half-dozen outstanding products within two seasons, the pitcher's factory at Boshamer Stadium has already begun working overtime to harvest Chapel Hill's brand-new batch of talent."
