My
friend megan and i drove from chapel hill to va. beach to see the lilith
fair on july 22. Lilith came to raliegh too, but without the
indigo girls.
So we made the four hour journey to see them. It had reached
100 degrees by the time we arrived at the ampitheather at 3:30. I
began to sweat from places i never knew i could before. We toured
lilith village, ran through the sprinkler, then went and settled down in
our seats. Suzanne Vega played first, she was pretty good although
i only knew one of her songs.
Missy
Elliot preformed next.
She came on stage in a huge blown up body suit!! It was great! She
gave a fantastic preformance - mingling with the audience and everything.
She asked the crowd to stand up twice, and no one did. So she left
after only a couple songs. I dont know if she normally played longer,
or if she was just annoyed. The crowd was very rude - i expected more from
a lilith crowd!
The Indigo Girls were next!! They played all their songs w/ minimal talk in between, which was dissapointing. The audience didn't stand up during the indigo girls' set either and couldnt even sing a verse of closer to fine that emily tried to let us sing. That was rather disturbing. About 25-50 of us tried to carry it ourselves, but it didnt work, and she picked up singing halfway through. Despite all of the annoying people taking up seats, the indigo girls were great. It was wonderful to finally get to hear them again. Even thought Amy and Emily have been known to be the tricksters of the tour, during the girls' set, sarah and natalie came out with super soaker water guns and sprayed the audience. Im sure if i had been close enough, it would have been welcome. Also, Emily's birthday is the 22nd, so Sarah McLachlan brought out a cake during their set and the whole audience sang to Emily. :) Here is their set list :
tried to be true
galileo
gone again (a new
one of amy's)
least complicated
shed your skin
get out the map
scooter boys
the weight (by
the band)
water is wide
happy birthday

closer to fine
rumor has it that the
girls came out on stage again and provided backup during
Natalie Merchant's 'kind and generous', but
megan and i had fled our seats trying to escape the never ending
thank-yous, so we missed that part.

After
natalie, was Sarah McLachlan.
She was fabulous! She played ice cream (one of my favorites) last
dance, sweet surrender, witness, possession, angel, and adia. She
really impressed me this time - she held one note for about 8 minutes!
seriously, it was incredible.

After sarah's encore,
all of the artists came back on stage and sang 'whats going on'.
it was wonderful. the crowd finally woke up and sang along.
Finally the spirit of lilith shone through. The singers left
stage in one big hug. Sarah - with one arm around amy and one around
emily. oh what i would have done to be part of that hug!
Here are some ig
