Text: Introductory Geology Laboratory (Custom manual for UNC-CH)
Geology 11L is an introductory lab created for non-majors and those thinking about majoring in geology. Upon completion of this lab, you will gain critical thinking and analytical skills that will carry you through your undergraduate career and beyond.
Geology 11L was created as a stand-alone course which can be taken either concurrently or independently from any of the introductory geology courses. As such, you will not be required to know any geology prior to this lab and I will not be testing you on any such material. However, I encourage both questions and discussions about material from your introductory classes in both lab and during my office hours.
I believe there are 3 things essential to success in my lab: attendance, participation, and preparation. Attendance is essential. If you miss a lab, a zero grade will be recorded for that lab. Excuses that will be accepted include illness (with note from Student Health Services), death in the family, and excused athletic events. If you have concerns, please see me and if possible I will make accommodations. Notification of excused absence must be received within a week for make-up in all cases. Outstanding work must be made up by the following class period barring any extenuating circumstances.
This lab encourages group-work and I encourage you to work out problems as a group. However, your work must ultimately be your own and reflect your own thoughts. You must uphold the University Honor Code or you will receive a zero for the labs in question.
There will also be one (1) field trip throughout the course during lab periods (no field trips for evening labs). For these labs, please dress appropriately (including closed toe shoes and no skirts) and be punctual since we will leave promptly at the beginning of lab to ensure you can make your next class.
Note: pencil must be used on each lab. One pen warning is allowed by each student. Afterwards, 5% will be deducted from following labs completed in pen.
Grading:Grading will include two components: Labs and Short Quizzes. Short quizzes will be announced at least a week before given and will be given at the beginning of the following lab period.
