UNC
School of Nursing
I have been on the UNC School of Nursing faculty since Fall,1988 teaching
courses (leadership in organizations, financial management, human resources
management and information management) in the master's program in Health
Care Systems. My current interest is the use of technology in education
and in distance education. I pioneered the first totally online course
in the School of Nursing in 1997 and have been teaching the online
course in Health Care Informatics for 4 years (revised each year).
It is available to students on campus, to students in the nursing administration
program at Queens College in Charlotte and to distance education students
across the United States and around the world.
In addition to my faculty role (Clinical Associate Professor), I am
the Director of the Center for Instructional Technology and Educational
Support at the School of Nursing. Our department staff works with
faculty to develop web-based educational materials, designs faculty slide,
poster and computer based presentations, and designs and maintains the
school's
web page . We develop
and present workshops related to the use of technology tools such as PowerPoint,
Blackboard.com's CourseInfo, and on Teaching with Technology.
Personal
I've been married to Art for 40 years. Yes, I know that's considered
quite a feat in this day and time. Art is retired and keeps very busy with
community activities, working for the Chapel Hill Police department and
playing golf. Of course, the busier he is with his work, the less time
he has for golf these days.
We have 2 wonderful children (Ellen and Eric) and 2 equally wonderful children-in-law (Beth and Mike). Eric and Beth have 2 sons, Aaron 7 1/2 and Max 3 1/2. Eric and Beth are both attorneys in Greenville, SC. Ellen and Michael also have 2 sons, Carson 5 and Nicholas 2 1/2. Ellen is a Human Resources Specialist with First Union Bank; Mike is a Hydrogeologist..
We have a little, black cocker spaniel mix who is 13 years old. His name is Augie - for those of you old enough to remember (or addicted to old cartoons), he was named after Augie Doggie because Art wanted to be Augie Doggie Daddy! Explanations available for anyone too young to understand! Augie thinks he's still a puppy and is an important part of our family.
Education
I received a doctorate in Nursing Administration from the Virginia
Commonwealth University and a Master's in Education from the University
of North Carolina at Charlotte. My basic nursing degree was from
New York University/Bellevue Hospital Center.
Experience
My experiences in nursing have ranged from clinical to teaching to
administration and back to teaching. The clinical areas in which I worked
were equally varied. My first love was the emergency room and critical
care, then I moved to a small geriatric hospital, and finally managed a
maternal/child department. One would think that I couldn't keep a job -
but, I'd rather say that my eclectic experience uniquely prepared me to
be a nursing administrator in a large community medical center and provided
the experiences that I rely on to inform my teaching..
My administrative experience included being a Director of Nursing, Clinical Director, Assistant Administrator for Resource Management, and a Director of Nursing Systems. It was in this role that I began my love affair with finance and computers (in addition to management). This lead me to return to school and to move into the role of nurse educator in the graduate program at the School of Nursing.
