For instance, in response to a question: Why did Ned crook his finger? a legitimate answer might be: In order to start the revolution. Thus, reasons and intended consequences might lead us outward to the richest description instead of inward to the thinnest. The problem of infinite regress is, I believe, soluble, but a detailed exposition of this must wait for another time.
