Introduction

Library programming for our youngest patrons can be a children's librarian's most daunting task--yet many who present Mother Goose Times say that these "Books and Babies" programs often turn out to be both rewarding work and delightful play. Through songs, rhymes, simple stories, and lots of clapping, Mother Goose Time develops babies' language and literacy skills, helping to prepare them to become children who enjoy reading books and visiting libraries!

It is my hope that you will enjoy visiting this site. May it link you to information that provides inspiration as you plan programs that educate and entertain infants and toddlers.

Scope

This pathfinder is intended for children's librarians and others working in public library children's services, who would like to learn more about Mother Goose Time, who would like to start or enhance their own "Books and Babies" programs. Other users might include parents, caregivers, social services professionals, and literacy advocates. This pathfinder focuses on resources to help one prepare a Mother Goose TIME, not upon Mother Goose history or the rhymes themselves. One looking for such is encouraged to visit the Internet Public Library's "Pathfinder: Nursery Rhymes" site, available at http://www.ipl.org/div/pf/entry/48512. In addition, this Mother Goose Time Pathfinder does not highlight infant development or emergent literacy, though an understanding of both will better inform one's planning.
