Southern Newspapers and the Ideology of Reform |
|
|

|
This project explores the nature of Southern newspaper treatment of
antebellum reform to develop an understanding of the reform function of the
newspaper in relationship to its community, its ownership and journalistic
principles of the period. To that end we hope to relate editorial content
to subsequent development of public policy and the passage of local, state
and federal legislation in the areas of social reform. Our goal is to
understand the contemporaneous relationship between newspaper coverage and
opinion and public policy. That analysis will, in our view, provide a base
for greater understanding of the relationship of press ownership and
political orientation, on the one hand, and of the ideology and
accomplishment of social change, on the other. |
