Jeanne Smythe
Work History
After
more than thirty years at UNC, I retired from Information Technology Services
in the Spring Semester of 2006. A brief article summarizing my career at UNC
was published in The Hub
.
I
was fortunate to have my last major project be the one that was the most fun for
me. In 1998 I started the Information Security Office. There were few dedicated information security
programs at the time, so there was no blue print for how to proceed -
everything we did was innovative, fun, and exciting from building a security
team, developing policies, reaching out to departments across campus,
establishing work flow and procedures for incident response, to implementing
intrusion prevention systems and security information management systems.
It
was an awesome opportunity to start with a new concept, work with gifted
enthusiastic people all over campus, and grow the Security Office into a valued
mature service. As the Security Office
grew, our work was recognized beyond campus. For example, as part of a series
of articles about Security thought leaders, in 2008 SANS interviewed Doug Brown
about Security Office teamwork and
our partnership with ITS Networking to enhance
intrusion detection and prevention was cited in an article about Education
All-Stars in Networking World.

Recent Travel
In the last year, I’ve had the opportunity for two
extended trips to Europe. Last Fall I visited
my daughter in Blois, France. Living steps from the Chateau royal de Blois
with a good view of a small park from her balcony was like being in a fairy
tale. I loved the warmth of the people I met, we
delighted in the food, and found the tourist attractions charming.
In DecemberI
visited Spain – Madrid for the art museums and the city life, Granada for the Alhambra,
and Costa del Sol for a bit of sun. This was my first trip to Spain, and a
demonstration of how little I retained from a Spanish class I took a few years
ago.
