| The
Pro Bono Program is designed to help attorneys regardless of geographic
distance or length of assignment, and provides access to the largest and
most comprehensive legal library in the state of North Carolina. We offer
students use of a fax machine and phone to facilitate communications with
each placement.
The service is open to attorneys working on cases at no charge or at significantly reduced charges. This includes Legal Services lawyers, lawyers in non-profit organizations, and attorneys in private practice and corporations who are providing pro bono services. The one requirement is that a practicing attorney supervise the Pro Bono volunteer(s); non-profits that want to use the service must either have an attorney on staff or must find an attorney in their community who is willing to serve as a student supervisor. We strive to assign law students to new placements within three business days, although it is sometimes difficult to meet this goal in the last few weeks of the semester before finals begin (late November and late April). The Pro Bono Program also works with attorneys to set up large-scale projects requiring multiple student volunteers, but generally requires advance notice to handle such requests. The Pro Bono Program is run by Sylvia Novinsky, associate director for public interest law in the UNC Law School's Career Development and Placement office, and several student coordinators.
