First published in 1830.

The Book of Mormon is the source for the nickname
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church claims
that Joseph Smith translated the book from gold plates buried in the Hill
Cumorah, in upstate New York. An angel named Moroni apparently appeared
to Smith several times, and showed him where the plates were buried. The
Book of Mormon is mainly an account of a people who lived on the American
continents approximately 2,000 years ago. The Mormons regard this book
as holy scripture, along with the Bible, the Doctrine and Covenants,
and the Pearl of Great Price. The Book of Mormon is extensively
footnoted and topically indexed.
Doctrine and Covenants and Pearl of
Great Price. Salt Lake City, UT: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, 1981. First published in 1835 and 1851.

The Mormon Church considers both the Doctrine and
Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price scripture. The Doctrine
and Covenants, however, is different from other scripture because
contains modern revelation. Most revelations in the book were given to
Joseph Smith, although some were given to other early prophets of the
church. "Official Declarations" of the church are also included.
The Pearl of Great Price contains "a selection from the revelations,
translations, and narrations of Joseph Smith" including the books
of Moses and Abraham, "Joseph Smith-Matthew," "Joseph Smith-History,"
and the "Articles of Faith." Both works are heavily footnoted
and indexed.
