A great reference for researchers interested in specific topics, this immense index lists scholarly works, primary biographical manuscripts, and Utah history resources. The work excludes vignettes and polemic writings. The "Index of Historical Writings" lists sources in Mormon history by topic. Another component of the bibliography is a "Topical Guide to Published Social Science Literature on the Mormons," which gives the researcher another tool to social science topics of Mormonism. Although this bibliography is intended for researchers, people with casual interest in Mormonism may find it helpful.

This book is a companion volume to Studies in Mormon History, 1830-1997. The authors describe and interpret past works in Mormon history, and they intend the work as a handbook for people who are beginning to study the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Valuable for evaluating sources, this volume includes essays on Mormon reference material, in addition to a history of Mormon historical writing.
