Although this volume does not survey Mormon history in words, it presents photographs of early church artifacts. Surrounded by brief discussion of the items and their context, the visual history provided by these pictures is worthwhile. They include items associated with three main topics: "Early Latter-day Saint Temples," "Social Settings in Early Church History," and "the Doctrine and Covenants in Church History."

Tobler, Douglas F. and Nelson B. Wadsworth. The History of the Mormons in Photographs and Text: 1830 to the Present. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1987.

This book's best feature is its photographs. The volume includes mostly pictures, accompanied by text about Mormon history. In addition, the book contains a history of Mormon photography, along with a timeline and bibliography. Although the book does not have an index and the text is limited, the pictures are valuable for visualizing the history of the Mormon people.
