About Eyes to Space

Eyes to Space will rock your robot sock hop! Tone-bending blasts from frontman Jay Cartwright's homemade keytar punctuate complex, hook-laden songs, executed with technical precision, that anachronistically sample many genres while emulating none. The catchy rhythms of '60s pop, the blissed-out chord progressions of grainy educational filmstrips, the bombast of post-rock guitar, and the bouncy synth melodies of old-school Nintendo all get distorted through the ironic lens of nerd-gone-underground. Songs about science and humanity, the dread and hope for apocalypse: never have tunes so thematically bleak been presented with such glee. This is music that's aggressive, witty, dark and fun: dance music for the robot intelligentsia. The band has recently put the finishing touches on a four-song EP, which they plan to distribute as part of a national promotional campaign. While Cartwright continues his production of the new lineup's debut album, Eyes to Space, as busy as ever, continues to play shows both locally and throughout the Southeast.

Members

Jay Cartwright (keytar)

Frontman Jay Cartwright will bewitch and confuse you with the complex catchiness of his singular style of songwriting, not to mention his homemade key-tar (or synth-tar, if you prefer).  Rigged from a MIDI keyboard, planks of Home Depot lumber and a light-dimmer switch for volume control, the keytar’s Ghostbuster aesthetic must be seen to be believed.  His vocal delivery and stage presence waxes ironic, as does his not-a-slave-to-fashion wardrobe of button-up plaid shirts and accountant slacks.  Jay hails from Raleigh, NC, is a former member of Rashomon, Roman Candle, and Nathan Asher and the Infantry.

Dylan Thurston (drums / percussion)

With a Bachelor of Music in Percussion Performance, Dylan Thurston slaps a minimalist trap kit with maximum punch.  Don’t be fooled by that choirboy voice and trim waistline – Dylan’s as macho as they come, be it on snare or kick or glockenspiel.  He is from Greensboro, NC, is a former member of The Bandits and President's Choice, and is the current keyboard wizard of the Xtreme Badasses.

Andy Spain (guitar)

Andy is two parts Eddie Van Halen and one part Thurston Moore.  A jerk with a heart of gold, Andy could kill you with his bare hands, but won’t, usually.  Andy grew up in Birmingham, AL and Charlotte, NC, and is served shaken, not stirred.

Wendy Spitzer (bass / oboe)

With a total awareness of the oboe bordering on that of a Zen master (and a degree in it to boot), Wendy has moved forward into the realm of the bass guitar.  Add some yeasty synth bass to the mix, and you’ve got a recipe for low end that’ll set the oven of rock on fire.  Only time will tell what other instruments are yet to be mastered by the queen bee of space rock. Wendy retains her Canadian citizenship, even after the many formative years spent in Charlotte, NC.  She is a former member of The Chabs, The Family-Pleasing Meatball Heroes, and symphonies and wind ensembles of all stripes.  She currently plays bass for the Chapel Hill chamber pop outfit The Physics of Meaning.
