Hindu Center
Charlotte, North Carolina

When I visited the Hindu Center of Charlotte on a  Thursday morning during the summer of 1998, housekeepers were loading up the trash after cleaning the temple, and a temple organizer was handling some administrative tasks.  She greeted me and informed me that this temple had been without a priest for about six months but that a new priest had arrived from India that week.  As we entered the main hall, the priest was sitting behind a railing at the base of a platform which was divided into five sections.  Each section housed a different sculpted image of a deity, beginning with Ganesh on the right side, then Shiva, Radha-Krishna in the middle, then Durga, and Mahavir Jain on the left side.  The temple organizer called the priest over to speak with me briefly.  He discussed elements of the Hindu tradition briefly, including the influence of Jainism and Buddhism, then he returned to his chanting.  As we left, the priest locked the temple and walked to a neighboring house, where I presume that he was living (at least temporarily).
