The religious and cultural activities of South Asian-Americans extend well beyond the temples. Many people celebrate religious festivals, maintain cultural activities, serve the larger community, or participate in devotional activities in meetings organized by an array of regional, political, and social organizations. The list below presents a glimpse into the diversity of these organizations. While some organizations are primarily professional or political in form, many sponsor activities that draw on the broader religious and cultural heritage of South Asia, to the extent that we can even draw the definite boundaries around classifications such as religious, cultural, or professonal. I have included Pakistani-American organizations along with Indian-American organizations because dividing along those political lines is difficult. Many organizations incorporate both Indian-Americans and Pakistani-Americans. Do to the large variety of organizations in the Southeastern United States, I have limited this list to Georgia and North Carolina to make it more manageable, but it is not exhaustive even for those states.
