PORTFOLIO!

When I came to Carolina, I decided to write for the Daily Tar Heel, the campus newspaper. I had no previous news writing experience, but I thought it would be a really good way to get involved, so I joined the staff my freshman year. I wrote for a year-and-a-half before I went abroad the second semester of my sophomore year. Anyone who's ever worked for the DTH knows what a big part of your life it becomes when you do it! Most of the days you work are LONG, so you can log in up to 20 hours a week, depending on the stories you write; but I wouldn't trade that experience for anything. I thought it was great to be in the middle of everything on campus and to be "in the know" about events that were affecting my life. Plus, the desk I worked for, the University Desk, became like a family to me, so I definately miss all of them! Below are a few clips of mine on stories I enjoyed writing, and I also included some pictures from "work!"

This is a link to the very first article I wrote for the DTH. It was on the upgraded housekeeping services building, so I got to interview some really nice people. Here's the link below:

"Services Building Upgraded"

This is an article I wrote about rising golf prices at Finley Park. It was an issue that was important to a lot of students who previously used the course, so I enjoyed writing it. Here's the link below:

"Officials to take Swing at Higher Finley Fees"

This article is more of a feature-type story. The paper ran a two-part series about rape on campus, and this was the first article I contributed. I interviewed a student here who had been raped in high school. It was a very sad story, but hopefully, one that would help numerous other girls who had been in the same position. Here's the link below:

"I Kept Telling Myself It Wasn't My Fault"

This is the second article in the two-part feature on rape, and I worked on it with another staff writer from the DTH. In the story, we provided information on services in the area that offer support to rape victims. Here's the link below:

"Picking Up the Pieces"

This article came amidst the confusion of election season on the UNC campus in the Spring of 1999, and a variety of rules and regulations were broken this year. Congress passed a code that prohibited campus group publications from endorsing candidates if they received student fees. Here's the link below:

"Printed Endorsements an Election Faux Pas"

This article was written during the labor code dispute on campus. UNC had struck up a deal with Nike, but it was later revealed that the athletic company's labor force was composed of sweatshop workers. This caused extensive debate on campus and pressured the former Chancellor Michael Hooker to reevaluate the labor code UNC had with Nike. Here's the link below:

DTH office, Spring '99

This is a picture from the DTH office. From the left, it's me, Amy Stephens, Lindsay Kim, and Katie Abel. We all worked on the same day, and it was always nice having friends in the office, particularly when you were stressed because of a tough story! (Spring 1999).

DTH party, Spring '99

This is a picture from the DTH party, also in Spring 1999. These parties were wild - I guess it's true, the DTH staff works hard and parties hard! This is almost all of the University Desk from that semester.
