  • implies a passive role, following demands of prescriber
  • noncompliers seen as deviants, incompetent, unable to follow instructions

• Adherence

  • implies an active role, in collaboration with prescriber
  • self-motivated decision to adhere to treatment advice
  • self-regulation of illness and treatment
