After
Suzy Whaley won the Connecticut PGA Section Championship on Sept. 16,
2002, she qualified to play in the 2003 Greater Hartford open. Since
Whaley is a UNC graduate, I thought she'd speak with me because I wrote
for The Daily Tar Heel. She was more than happy to talk, and so I wrote
a column about whether she should play in the GHO. (NOTE: In Dec. 2002,
she announced she would play when the tournament would be held in late
July 2003. She finished 13-over par and missed the cut.)

| This about Ford Williams, a member for the UNC men's soccer team and Under-20 U.S. National Soccer Team, and how as a result of the war in Iraq, the FIFA World Youth Championships that were supposed to be held in the United Arab Emirates in April and May 2003 were postponed and how it affected him. (NOTE: After the war ended, FIFA announced the tournament will be played in Novembe/December 2003.) | |

This is a story I wanted to write for about six months but couldn't find the time to do it until the summer. It's about how men's basketball, baseball and men's and women's soccer coaches deal with losing players prematurely. Be it to the draft or national team call-ups, things like that. After writing it, I wish I broke it up into a series because I got so much information that I couldn't use. Nevertheless, I still think it's a damn fine story. |
| Quest for Money Drove Expansion | This is an analysis piece about the most bizarre news event I've ever been involved with - ACC expansion. While the ACC tried to paint the picture that it was trying to sustain its long-term viability, the whole deal was about $$$$. |
| This is a sidebar about UNC women's basketball player Nikita Bell and her performance in the first round of the NCAA Tournament against Austin Peay. Her performance led UNC to a win, but Bell suffered from altitude sickness (the game was in Boulder, Colo.) and didn't remember much about the game. | |
| This is the accompanying game story from UNC's 72-70 win against Austin Peay in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. | |
| This is a sidebar about UNC freshman pitcher Adam Kalkhof and his performance against Georgia Tech on April 5, 2003. Kalkhof was brilliant against one of the best team's in the country, having a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings. | |
| This game had all the potential to match the hype of a men's UNC-Duke game. UNC was ranked No. 6 and Duke was No. 2. They'd played a classic game earlier in the year to set the tone for this one. And, for whatever reason, UNC decided not to show up and Duke ran them right out of the gym. | |
| This is a column I wrote toward the end of the 2002-03 season while there was some heat on UNC men's basketball coach Matt Doherty. I thought he deserved to keep his job. Frankly, the guy just rubbed me the wrong way, but I still thought he needed at least another. Six weeks later, though, he got canned. Clearly, my opinion isn't valued all that much by the UNC Dept. of Athletics. | |
| This is a preview of the UNC baseball team for the 2003 season. It was only supposed to be about 14 inches, but I kept writing and writing, and fortunately, my editor managed to find a smaller photo to run, which afforded me all the space I got. After UNC swept Seton Hall in its first series of the season, Seton Hall's coach told us we characterized the team perfectly. | |
| UNC freshman Rashad McCants was slumping during the middle of the 2002-03 season, and as the emotional leader of the young UNC squad, this game was his low point. I felt kind of bad ramming a tape recorder in his face after the worst game of his career, but that's a part of the job. I got over it. | |
| This is a game story about UNC's 76-64 win against Georgia Tech. What I learned from this game is that Georgia Tech coach Agnus Berenato is one of the funniest coaches in women's basketball. She's as sarcastic as UConn's Geno Auriema, but without the condescension. Sadly though, she's departed the Yellow Jackets and will try to build the women's program at Pittsburgh. Maybe she'll be able to give Geno a run for his money over there in the Big East. | |

This
was a game story I wrote for the DTH following the UNC-Duke men's soccer
game on Sept. 28, 2002. This is my favorite game story because I think
it's one of the catchiest ledes I've come up with. I stared at the computer
all morning trying to come up with something. I wrote out "close
only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades" with no intention
of using it, but playing off that cliche lead me to what I ended up
with.

| Evidently, the UNC and Duke football teams play for the Victory Bell every year. Who knew? Not too many people. So I wrote a column about it following the 2002 game, which UNC won for what seems like the billionth straight year. | |
| Make Way for Courage, N.C. Sports | This is the first column I wrote for the DTH. It's about the Carolina Courage winning the 2002 Founders Cup to become the first professional sports team inthe state of North Carolina to win a league championship. I had no clue what I was doing, but the sports editor just said to write something. I tried to be funny by slipping in a little self-deprecation, but some have said I painted myself to be a sad person. I thought it was funny. Decide for yourself. |
| This is a column I wrote after wasting an entire Saturday on the couch flipping back and forth between too many college football games. It was fantastic. |
