Ecology: The atmosphere of Corillia is a nitrogen-oxygen blend. The planet’s surface is primarily one great ocean of salt water. At the poles, this is frozen into small icecaps. One large archipelago exists, mostly covered by grassland and mountains. Jungle ecosystems occur at the lower altitudes along the coastal areas and are responsible for most of the planet’s biodiversity. The planet’s resources are found in its quantities of water and silicates. The world’s major industries are in precious metals and desalinized water. People: The Corillian race is native to the highlands of the Corillian continents. Corillians are giant, oxygen-breathing humanoids and are primarily herbivores. An average Corillian stands nearly 8m high and can lift roughly 350kg. A typical Corillian has three large, featureless fingers on each hand and large, spreading, three-toed feet. Corillian eyes are large, roughly diamond-shaped bulbs designed to collect light. There is a thin central organ crossing the entire eye vertically which functions as a pupil and distinguishes detail. Corillians have exceptionally wide mouths, an evolutionary trait from ancient times when their diet was still primarily large, grazing land mammals.
Corillian
history was mostly peaceful, as the Corillians themselves tend to be
good-natured and unobtrusive. There was, however, one major conflict
in their early history which helped to define their modern cultural
identity. In 2047, having only recently become a spacefaring race,
the Corillians encountered and inadvertently insulted visitors form
Tarnak. This resulted
in a major interstellar war, which was soon enough lost by Corillia,
although new markets for the planet’s goods were opened on both Tarnak
and Leptax. Following the disaster,
in 2053, Corillia made amends and entered into an alliance with Tarnak
and Leptax, the Trifederate.
This enabled the Corillians to modernize their mercantile economy while
shifting away from feudalism. Corillia became a leader in pioneering
new systems for resources and initiated the first trade agreements with
the Union of Independent
Planets. Entry into the Solar
Alliance in the 22nd century opened doors to new markets and enabled
Corillia to become a charter member of the Interstellar
Organization of United Imperial Worlds.
The discovery of large ancient alien ruins in the Corillian rainforest has made the planet particularly important to archaeologists and astronomers attempting to decipher the languages of the ancients. A number of stele at one site near Crettla, known as Cettan, seem to designate certain times of the Corillian year as important, although the reasons are not known. Corillia
is now a major center of interstellar trade, with several trade routes
established to the PLISM, Southern
Alliance, and Union
of Independent Planets. The planetary society is no longer
geared towards a centralized culture, but is a rich blend of all the
cultures which have effected Corillia’s history and development.
Although most structures are based on the large steel plans of Tarnaci
architecture, the older districts of Crettla
still stand in the original cyclopean stonework of the feudal age.
Crettla is known as the home of the Imperial Ministry of Trade, based
in the old Tribunal Hall, and the Interstellar
Cartographic Survey Division.
