Mélas Dornos was a prosperous industrialist of Beta-Tauri 4 who was elected Emperor of the Interstellar Organization of United Imperial Worlds by a small margin in 2293.  His administration was characterized by a variety of scandals and mishaps and Dornos himself was often labeled as a very unstable autocrat.  Dornos was almost singlehandedly responsible for the creation of the Imperial Industrialist Party and pushed a large quantity of pro-industy legislation through the Parliament of Planets. 

Despite a reputation for heavy-handed politics, Dornos created funds for education in the sciences and oversaw the completion of new research centers at Leptax University and the construction of New Melfex University on Beta-Tauri 4.  His unexpected plans to retire were announced in 2299, spurred by the Kiev Massacre of the previous year.  He gave up the throne in 2301 and died suddenly the following year.
