The Imperial Army is the main force maintained by the United Imperial Worlds for the purpose of planetary military action.  Its headquarters, located on Dawn, is thought to be largest single military fortification in the known galaxy.  The army maintains numerous independent armies, each smaller than the whole, which are capable of separate simultaneous strikes as well as defending captured objectives.  These armies are composed of a variety of divisions, each suited towards a particular form of warfare.

Infantry:  The imperial infantry accounts for roughly 40% of the army’s total manpower.  These divisions are capable of performing unsupported assaults as well as participating in joint operations.  Their strength lies in small units of foot soldiers most often armed with blaster rifles, concussion mortars and anti-armor weapons.  Most units have vacuum and low-G battle capabilities.

Heavy Infantry:  These units are virtually identical to infantry divisions, except that they are equipped with powered combat armor and are often capable of battle in hostile environments.

Armor:  Armor divisions provide the main ground assault capabilities of the Imperial Army.  They are usually composed of either Hovertanks or Vacctanks.  Armor is useful in quickly bombarding and rushing into a fortified position, as well as breaking through stationary fronts. 

Artillery:  Divisions composed of artillery are primarily utilized in the bombardment of hardened fortifications and of supply routes.  They are most often stationary during battle, and usually relocate only during relatively quiet periods, as they are not heavily armored to any degree.

Drop Troops:  These are infantry divisions equipped with VTOL pods capable of landing troops behind enemy lines.  However, because the divisions are relatively lightly armed, they are most often used in precision tactical strikes in which the troops quickly exit a drop site as quickly as they entered.

Marines:  These divisions, split into battalions and placed on board naval vessels, are composed of highly trained infantry units which are capable of starship security and boarding operations.  Marines often supplement drop troops in strike operations.

Engineering Corps:  Engineering divisions are responsible for the construction of fortifications, repair and maintenance of bridges, trenches, and supply depots, as well as a variety of other tasks.

Signal Corps:  Signal Corps is the smallest group of specialized soldiers in the Imperial Army, yet perhaps the most important.  They attend to the unhindered flow of information to and from troops in the field, as well as gather information.
