The Southern Alliance is known to be a loose confederation of member-worlds united for purposes of defense and trade.  The primary world of this organization, Gatraxia, is assumed to be the dominant planet within the alliance, although their domination is not secure at all times due to a coalition of Vaatrel and Kesh.  The other member worlds, Kochabine and Merz, are less active in the administration of the alliance.  The government is known to be set up as a autocratic power.  A chairman, who may gain the ascendancy through almost any means, controls both the military and civilian sectors almost completely.  The only challenge to his power is often the Allied Senate, who attempt to make lasting laws.  The structure beyond this is not fully understood, although it is clear that member-worlds have often denied military and economic support to the alliance in matters unsupported by their own regimes.

The Southern Alliance was created following the 2065 war between Kesh and Beta-Tauri 4, in which the Keshti were sorely defeated and suffered heavy losses.  Gatraxia seized the opportunity to force a “mutual” defense treaty in 2067, which legally bound Kesh to the status of a tributary planet.  In 2085, Vaatrel and Kochabine joined voluntarily, to help defend their militarily weak planets.  It is not known when Merz gained membership in the Southern Alliance.  Little is known of the Alliance outside of information discovered or captured during the Sunrise War of 2342-43 and information gathered through interstellar traders.
