Areas of Interest

• My primary interest is in elucidating the social forces that contribute to patterns of sexually transmitted diseases in communities.

• Social epidemiology is entwined with social ethics. A second area of interest for me is thus public health ethics. I was the principal author of the American Public Health Association's Code of Ethics. I founded and direct the Program in Public Health Ethics at the UNC School of Public Health.

• My interest in teaching led to my editing and writing of the textbook entitled Epidemiologic Methods for the Study of Infectious Diseases, published by Oxford University Press, and creating resources for teaching public health ethics.
