Search Results for Information on Bowling Balls

Introduction

For my search, I wanted to find information on the science of bowling balls: how they work, the physics involved, the importance of the materials they're made of, etc. What I did not want is sales information on specific kinds of bowling balls. It's easy to find this kind of information. It's more difficult to find good information about bowling balls in general.

Search 1: Altavista.com

I thought these keywords would narrow down the search a bit, but I still received over 12,000 results from this search. However, I still thought the search was successful for several reasons. First, the search didn't return hardly any websites that sell or market bowling balls, which I like. It's difficult to simply find good, general information on the web without being solicited to. Also, the first website returned by the search is excellent. It's called Bowling Science and it has all kinds of information about bowling ranging from the physics of the sport to the nutrition and exercise that can help you be a btter bowler. It does have a shopping link, but this aspect doesn't dominate the site like it does most sites.

Search 2:Dogpile.com

I had never heard of this site before, so I decided to give it a try. It did return the same great Bowling Science website, but the search still wasn't as good as the one on Altavista.com. The reason it wasn't is because Dogpile.com also returned a bunch of websites on ball lightening and, of course, a lot of websites at which I could purchase bowling balls.

Search 3:Northernlight.com

Northernlight.com was a surprising, but successful search. It returned a lot of semi-obsucre sites that I probably wouldn't have found using most search engines. For example, it returned a bowling clinic website and the bowling ball development site for Brunswick Inc. I liked it a lot.

Conclusion

So, which search engine do I like better? Well, it depends. I think Altavista.com and Dogpile.com are a lot alike. If you have a general topic and want just a broad range of information on it, I'd say these websites are the way to go. Just watch out advertisements on Dogpile.com. However, if your search is more specific and think you'll have to find smaller, more discreet websites, Northernlight is the first choice of these three. In my case, I feel bowling ball science is pretty specific. I didn't want information about just bowling balls in general or where I could buy them. I wanted to know how they work, etc. Thus, I felt searching Northernlight.com was the most successful out of these three searches.
