Preamble Adopted for UNC Proposed Constitution

The parties to the Convention,

Recognizing that all people are born free and equal in dignity and rights, and as a human family,

we must uphold these unalienable rights,

Recognizing that all humans are interconnected and have a responsibility to act for the common good of all people,

Considering that the Constitution of the United States of America is lacking, in that, it only addresses political and civil rights,

Understanding that there is a necessity to also guarantee cultural, social and economic rights,

Acknowledging that working for collective rights will create a more harmonious society,

Now therefore,
We, the Constitutional Delegates, propose the following Constitution:

- Crista Cuccaro and Bria Marcelo

"What is Society's duty? What is our government's duty? It is our duty to look out for our friends, our family, and ourselves. Can we then deduct that it is society's and our government's responsibility to somehow marry all of these many different individuals in harmony? The ultimate question then comes forward, is our government and society doing this? Maybe not, Maybe yes, regardless of the answer, if we are going to ask for more for our lives, we must also look outward and beyond; and ask for more out of our government and society. This discussion is the first step. "

We the people do hereby ordain and establish this constitution, a framework by which to enhance dignity, enable equality, embrace diversity, encourage collectivity of action, and ensure justice for all, setting forth as fundamental and invaluable to the United States of America the rights and freedoms inherent to all humanity.

The fall 2007 Sociology 273 class, in its desire to promote social and economic justice for all people, proclaims in this Constitution its will to:
promote freedom of all people to live satisfying and healthful lives,
do justice to marginalized groups of society,
safeguard individual liberties,
protect consumers from exploitative business practices,
take direct action to combat social and environmental issues,
establish reasonable yet effective measures to protect the environment,
provide equal education for all people,
advance the quality of life for everyone,
champion the value of peace domestically and abroad,
and in all ways strive to achieve human dignity.

In John Milton's freedom text he says, "We care not to keep truth separated from truth." In this constitution, we care not to isolate the truths about human rights and dignities. We the people declare that one man's rights should not be distinguishable from other man's rights. Thus, we the Constitutional Delegates find this Constitution as a rightful proposal to guarantee the civil, political, and economic freedoms for all those who find haven in the United States of America.

We the delegates to the UNC Constitutional Convention, in order to form a more united society free from any injustices and inequalities that may seek to stifle individual autonomy, propose to the people of the United States the following individual and collective rights as human beings, through which no one may be deprived the underlying tenets of social and economic justice in which our humanity is grounded.

We the people, in order to establish a better society for all, both native and naturalized, provide the following Constitution that will continue to guarantee civil and political rights, as well grant social, economic and cultural rights aimed at ensuring every citizen has access to human rights that will insure the well-being and protection of individuals.
