Brief Bio

Todd was born in the bitterly cold upper Northeast, a fact he has suppressed by living in (and loving) the South since he was three years old. His parents kept him in Jacksonville, FL from 1967 to 1973; Atlanta, GA from 1973 to 1977; and Tampa, FL from 1977 to 1983.

Todd attended Emory University in Atlanta from 1983 to 1987, graduating with a B.A. in English. He worked briefly in restaurants and advertising before beginning graduate studies at the University of South Florida in Tampa in 1991. There he completed a Ph.D. in English with a specialization in rhetoric and composition. He joined the faculty in English at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in July 1997. He received tenure in July 2002 and became a full professor in July 2007. Todd served as Director of the UNC Writing Program from July 2005 to July 2009. In July 2009, he was appointed the Norman and Dorothy Eliason Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature. He directed the London Honors Study Abroad Program, Winston House, UK in fall 2009.

Todd's work doesn't seem very much like work to him, although it is a lot of work. He very much enjoys teaching and publishing. His research and teaching have focused on how our notions of literacy are changing in response to emerging communications technologies such as the Internet. For the past decade, he has been concentrating on multimedia/hypertext authoring as well as on intersections between writing program curricula and instructional technology. Mostly recently, Todd and his students have been creating service-learning documentary films.

Todd met Jill while working at Cafe Creole in Ybor City, Tampa. They were married in 1992. At the time, Mystery the Wonder Dog was already living with the couple. About two years later they adopted Izzy the Snake Dog, and two years after that, Chaise the Greyhound. Casey, Dog of Squalor, was born in September 2005. Horses and cats arrived soon thereafter, at which point, chronicling the ever-changing and expanding menagerie became unwieldy.

Max (a child, not a dog) debuted in the summer of 1997. He is king of the wild things. Jake (another child) completed the crew in spring 2000. Todd, Jill, Max, Jake, (Mystery), Izzy, (Chaise), Casey, [Bhodi], Wilbur, Linus, Breeze, Hope, (Smitz), and Bootsie live in the forest outside Chapel Hill. They like it there very much.

Todd rides a Lamar snowboard and a Dogtown skateboard. He currently plays Mizuno irons, Cleveland wedges, Olimar woods, Yamaha acoustic, Fender bass, Epiphone Casino, and a vintage Telecaster like Keef. He believes Snowbasin Utah is the perfect ride. He plays and coaches a lot of soccer.
