The focus of Dr. Bayen's research program are basic and applied issues of cognitive aging with an emphasis on human memory and aging. She is investigating the effects of aging on encoding and retrieval processes, older adults' processing of contextual information in memory tasks, the effects of memory problems on older adults' judgment and decision making, and how older adults can compensate for problems with the acquisition of new information by drawing on prior knowledge. Her applied interests include the development and evaluation of educational materials that aid older adults' health care decisions, and the acquisition of computer skills by older adults.
