A Bit About My Classes

SILS

This has been a busy first semester for me here at UNC's School of Information and Library Science. I am taking four classes for a total of thirteen credit hours. All of them are required courses, so I have not yet taken an elective course. Rumor has it that perhaps in the fall semester, a scheduling conflict might force me to take an elective, but I'm not so sure yet. From what I have observed, there are two distinct types of people here: the 'library science' students and the 'information science' students. There's no judgment implied in this observation. It's just a fact. I am definitely more of a library science person. Not surprisingly, Reference and Collection Development are my favorite classes this semester. My other classes have not been bad, but they have been more on the information science side of things. Information Tools focuses on technology basics and the miniumum of what a library professional must know in this technological world to perform his or her job. Human Information Interactions studies the basic questions of what is information and how do humans go about seeking information. Again, both are interesting, but I think the information science people seem to enjoy them more than I do.

The table below breaks down my week and shows you how I spend my time at SILS.

Of course, I have a lot of unstructured time. Much of it goes to commuting to UNC from Cary, where I live. On average, I probably spend eight to ten hours a week on Interstate 40 travelling between home and school. Most of the rest of my other time is spent at SILS or in Davis Library preparing for class. Also, I cannot forget work. They like it when I show up on schedule. So, in other words, life is busy.
