BIOGRAPHY


Not Steven H. Werlin
      Steve Werlin is a graduate student in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he studies the archaeology of Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine Palestine, as well as ancient Judaism.   He has worked under the direction of Dr. Jodi Magness since 1999, first as an undergraduate at Tufts University, and then as a doctoral candidate at UNC.   His research interests include Ancient Synagogue Art and Architecture, Hasmonean and Herodian Architecture and History, and Jewish Religious Practices in the Classical and Near Eastern world.   Steve typically spends his summers excavating in Israel.   Most recently, he served on staff for the Excavations in the Roman Fort at Yotvata, Israel, just north of Eilat during their final season of excavation in June 2007.   Steve has recently begun work on his dissertation project, which includes the publication and examination of the synagogue at 'En Gedi, excavated by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.   During the 2008-2009 academic year, Steve will be in Jerusalem as a fellow at the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research.
