Topic

I grew up reading Judy Blume's books, and she continues to be one of my favorite authors. While many authors write for a specific age group, Blume wrote many of my favorite children's books and recently authored Summer Sisters, an adult novel that is among my favorites. Authors like Blume have inspired me to want to become a book editor and eventually a fiction writer.
Through my internships at various publications and my courses in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, I have a developed my writing and editing skills. Since Bloom is one of my role models, I am interested in her advice on writing. I am also interested to find out the key elements of fiction writing and how to write marketable fiction.
My audience is anyone who is a Judy Blume fan or an aspiring fiction writer. Blume fans will be interested in my topic because I hope to find information on the author that explains how she became a successful writer. Aspiring fiction writers will hopefully have access to writing tips and advice from a successful author on my web page.

Title: Popular Search Engine Addresses User Complaints and Stops Selling Pornography (Topic Area: Net Controversy)

     (1) Yahoo!, the world's leading Internet search engine, has decided to ban sales of pornographic videos and DVDs from its sites. (1) The decision was made in early April, after many Yahoo! users complained about the easy access and availability of pornography. (2) "We consistently strive to act responsibly and constantly evaluate our policies based on what our users tell us," said Jeff Mallett, Yahoo! president and chief operating officer.
     (1) Yahoo! has been selling pornography for two years. (3) The site even employed staff to search for the directories on pornography sites and place sexually explicit advertising banners on related searches. (1) Users began complaining because children searching for family videos like Lady and the Tramp and Swallows may stumble upon more erotic titles, such as Debbie Does Dallas, Deep Throat and Swallow. (1)
The company has agreed to eliminate pornographic products from Yahoo! Shopping, Yahoo! Auctions, and Yahoo! Classified sites in the US. (1) In addition, Yahoo! will not sign any new contracts for advertising banners that promote pornographic products; those contracts already signed will be fulfilled.
      (1) Some have wondered about Yahoo!'s drop in revenue as a result of this decision, but Mallett said the financial losses will be minimal. (1) "We have a responsibility to our 67m registered users with whom we have an active dialogue," he said. (3)
Some have suggested that Yahoo!'s stance on porn has brought nationwide attention to an industry that was built around pornography, so much so that other search engines like Lycos are considering taking a similar stance.
