The 5th International Conference on East Asian Calligraphy Education was held in Hiroshima Japan, July 8-10, 2006. The conference was co-organized by Yasuda Women’s University in Japan and the Calligraphy Education Group (CEG) in the US. About 400 calligraphers and calligraphy educators attended the conference from mainland China, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong, and the US, in addition to local participants.
At the opening ceremony, a moment of silence was held in memory of Dr. Tsung Chin, founder of CEG and the initiator of the international conference series, who passed away earlier this year. Wendan Li, President of CEG and Co-Chair of the conference, spoke of Dr. Tsung Chin and his contributions to calligraphy education. A new feature of this year’s conference was an international student panel on the tradition and the future of calligraphy. The panel was put together by Dr. Tsung Chin himself when his health was declining. Eight students presented their view at the panel, four from Japan and four from the US (Univ. of Maryland, Univ. of Wisconsin and Univ. of North Carolina).
The three days of the conference were packed with panels, exhibits, brush and ink making demonstrations, students performances (including calligraphy), and a tour of Hiroshima. It was also announced that the 6th International Conference on East Asian Calligraphy Education will be held in Taiwan in 2008.
