I am working slowly on a novel. It will be about ambition and place at a University in the American South. If you would like to name a character please email me (wmckinne@email.unc.edu). Character names will be distributed on a first come first serve basis.
"The South has always had an affinity for things with corn in it." US Senator Strom Thurmond (italics curtesy of WCM).
"I am but fortunte's fool." Wm. Shakespeare.
Flock Billy Collins
Note: “It has been calculated that each copy of the Guttenberg bible required the skins of 300 sheep.”
I can see them squeezed into the holding pen
Behind the stone building where the printing press is housed.
All of them squirming around to find a little room,
And looking so much alike it would be nearly impossible to count them.
And there is no telling which one of them will carry the news that the Lord is a Shepard, One of the few things they already know.
Finally: the Fool's Prophecy from King Lear (III.3.80)
This is a brave night to cool a couresan. I'll speak
a prophecy ere I go:
When priests are more in word than matter;
When brewers mar their malt with water;
When nobles are their tailor' tutors,
No heretics burned, but wenches' suitors;
When every case in law is right,
No squire in debt nor no poor knight;
When slanders do not live in tongues,
Nor cutpurses come not to throngs;
When usurers tell their gold i'thfield,
And bawds and whores do churches build --
Then shall the realm of Albion
Come to great confusion.
Then comes the time, who lives to see't
That going shall be used with feet.
This prophecy Merlin shall make, for I live before his time.
Plus le change, plus le meme chose.
