Summary:

Chimpanzees are among the closest animals to man as far as intelligence. They have a large percentage of the same genes as humans also. They can be taught many things, even sign language, making it possible for them to communicate on a human level. Large populations of chimps, as well as orangutans, live on the continent of Africa.

Title: Center for Captive Chimpanzee Care

Web Address: http://www.savethechimps.org/

Description: The Center for Captive Chimpanzee Care was established in 1997, by Jane Goodall and Roger      Fouts, to create a safe place where chimpanzees could live out the remainder of their lives. The Center has      been awarded custody of 21 of the Air Force chimpanzees. The oldest chimpanzee, Hanzie, was born 40      years ago in Africa - right around the time Jane Goodall began studying chimpanzees in the wild. The      youngest, Lil' Mini, is six years old.

Title: The Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute

Web Address: http://www.cwu.edu/~cwuchci/

Description: CHCI is a safe haven for five adult chimpanzees who communicate with humans and each other      using American Sign Language (ASL). The purpose of CHCI is to protect and care for these Chimpanzees,      educate the public on the endangered status of wild chimpanzees, help improve the lives of all captive      chimpanzees through ongoing research, and serve as a humane research facility for students.

Title: Chimpanzees Are in Danger

Web Address: http://www.wildchimps.org/

Description: The Wild Chimpanzee Foundation is a group working to save between 20,000 and 25, 000 of the      remaining wild chimpanzees. Current estimates suggest that there may be fewer than 100,000 chimpanzees      living in seventeen different countries in Africa.

Title: Chimpanzee Management Program (ChiMP) for Biomedical Research Chimpanzees

Web Address: http://www.ncrr.nih.gov/compmed/Chimp19-June-01.htm

Description: This behavioral research program is designed to improve the care and management of captive      chimpanzees. Studies identify factors that influence the production of successful breeders from captive-born      animals, identify improvements in the care and behavioral management of chimpanzees, and objectively      evaluate forms of environmental enrichment and animal training.

Title: Chimp Guardian Program: Chimp Orphans in Africa

Web Address: http://www.janegoodall.ca/how/how_chimps_orph.html

Description: Many African governments are willing to confiscate infant chimpanzees from poachers or market      vendors who are offering the infants for sale either as pets or for the illegal export trade. To encourage      governments in Africa to continue confiscating the infant chimpanzees, the Jane Goodall Institute has set up      a program of sanctuaries throughout the continent where orphans can live together in a semi-natural      environment in the care of experienced and loving keepers. And you can help.

Mini Essay:
Chimpanzees have a history of being used in different types of research projects, whether it is space exploration or medical research. It has been found that their genetic make up is very similar to that of a human and is a good reason for them to be used in testing circumstances much like they were used in space.
There are many organizations out there now trying to protect and help these animals who have been targeted for research or that have already been a part of a research project. One such organization is The Center for Captive Chimpanzee Care. This group, started in part by Jane Goodall, provides a safe place for rescued chimps to live out their lives away from a research environment. They have rescued several chimps from Air Force testing and now provide them with the care and love they need.
Another organization found in my research was one that worked to save chimpanzees based on their low and dangerous numbers. The Wild Chimpanzee Foundation works to try and preserve the number of chimps that still remain, especially on the continent of Africa. They are working more specifically with wild chimps, but are concerned about chimp numbers in general.
One Last group that is worth mentioning is The Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute. This group is working to preserve the chimps who can communicate with humans and each other using sign language. Many people do not realize it, but this can be a very useful thing-chimps that can talk to humans-just think about the possibilities.
In this research I found many great organizations that are working in favor of our chimpanzees. This makes me really happy because they are my favorite animals and I would hate to see them in danger of extinction. We all need to be aware of animal testing and it's effects on that species as well as others. Is it really needed in most cases? It is something to think about!
