Troop 59 HistoryTroop 59 was chartered to North Chapel Hill Baptist Church on January 5, 2004. From an initial membership of four boys, Troop 59 has grown to a current membership of about 20 Boy Scouts. When Does Troop 59 Meet?Troop 59 meetings are Wednesdays during the school year from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. See our calendars for complete lists of events. Where Does Troop 59 Meet?At North Chapel Hill Baptist Church, 7707 Airport Road, just south of I-40, across from Harris Teeter and the Chapel Hill North shopping center. Boy Scout UniformsThe Boy Scout uniform is an integral part of the Scouting program. Every Troop 59 Scout should wear his full uniform to Troop meetings, as well as during travel to and from Troop outings. What Is The Troop 59 Uniform? The Troop 59 uniform consists of:
At this time, the Troop uniform does not include a hat or neckerchief. Where Do I Get A Uniform? The Troop maintains a lending closet of previously owned uniforms. Used uniforms can be purchased at eBay, and are sometimes available at the PTA Thrift Shop. New uniforms and other Scouting paraphernalia can be purchased at the Scout Shop in Raleigh or online through the BSA National Supply Division. Note that the Scout Shop will take telephone orders and ship the items to you by UPS if you don't want to make the trip to Raleigh. These should be brought to meetings and campouts. The cost is about $10 for standard bound and about $16 for spiral bound. The spiral bound version is easier to use and will usually last longer. We try to keep a supply on hand at regular meetings. AdvancementScouts earn rank advancement through successful completion of the requirements outlined in the Boy Scout Handbook. Merit Badges are earned to give Scouts more skill in things they already like to do; and give Scouts a chance to try out new activities. Rank advancement, merit badges, and other awards are presented at Troop Courts of Honor. These are held three to four times per year, and take place in the church sanctuary. Family participation at Courts of Honor is encouraged. Camping TripsTroop 59 goes on an outing every month (see our calendar). Most campouts are two nights and are on the weekend. Each summer, the Troop goes together for a week of summer camp at a BSA camp. Scouts are charged a fee to cover the costs of each campout. Costs may include: food, transportation, campground fees, supplies, and program fees. Money for campouts is due at the Troop meeting before the event. For Camporees, Summer Camp, and big trips, an advance payment schedule will be set up. LeadershipTroop 59 is a boy led Troop. The Scouts operate under their own elected leadership of a Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leaders, and various support officers. Each Scout is assigned to a Patrol whose members support, work, and compete together. Trained adult leaders supervise, manage, and advise the boys. Our Scoutmaster, Jimmy Workman, is Woodbadge trained and has over 40 years of Scouting experience. Our Charter Organization representative, John Humber, is a life-long Scouter. What About Safety?Troop 59 follows Safe Scouting policies and procedures from the Boy Scouts of America. All leaders have Youth Protection training, and at least two adults are present at all times. In order for a boy to earn the first rank of Scout, his parent/guardian must read the section on How to Protect Your Children from Child Abuse: A Parent's Guide at the front of the Boy Scout Handbook and discuss the material with their son. |
