The 250-year history of the United States runs parallel to the history of UNC-Chapel Hill. The birthplace of public higher education, Carolina opened its doors to students in 1795 and was the sole public university to award degrees in the 18th century.

“Witnesses to the Revolution: North Carolina and the War for Independence,” a collaboration between the University Library and North Carolina Museum of History, explores how the American Revolution swept through North Carolina, splitting communities that had to decide whether they wanted American independence or to remain under British rule.
