From classical music to heavy metal, Dariel Liakhovetski has played his cello for a variety of audiences to connect with people.
“Regardless of age, culture, background, language, the cello can speak to them, and that’s what makes it fulfilling for me to play,” he said.
Picking up the cello when he was 4 years old, Liakhovetski has spent years mastering his craft and playing on stages all over the world, including on America’s Got Talent, where he was a finalist with his brother in 2014.
Now a first-year dental student at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry, Liakhovetski is applying the skills and discipline he gained from his music to his academic studies.
“I see playing the cello as a graceful accompaniment to my dental studies,” he said. “There’s a great deal of discipline involved in delivering good quality dental work, and that’s very similar to how I approach playing the cello.”
