‘I never give up’

After immigrating from Iran when he was 13, Amirsaman Zahabioun was enrolled in English as second language classes. By the time he graduated high school, he was a published author.

English was not the first language for Amirsaman Zahabioun, but he didn’t let that stop him from creating a comprehensive language study guide for his high school classmates.

The incoming first-year student moved to the United States from Iran with his family when he was 13.

Having taken English classes since first grade, he was familiar with the language but was still enrolled in English as second language classes during his first year of high school in Charlotte, North Carolina. He took great pride in taking detailed notes on everything he learned.

As a junior, he realized his notes could be helpful to more students like him and turned them into a book called “The Complete Guide to High School English Literature,” which is now in its second edition.

“I always try my best,” said Zahabioun, who hopes to study medicine at Carolina. “No matter the challenges, I never give up.”
